In these strangely different times, some of the most meaningful gestures to help support the bereaved—a hug, a visit, an offer to babysit the kids—are all out, at least for the foreseeable future.
It can be tough to know what’s an appropriate gift when you’re not there to hand deliver it with your condolences. But several companies are making it easier, so you don’t have to fret about whether you’re doing the right thing.
1. Comfort with foodFood gifts are one of the most requested items in a recent Wishbar survey and many online shops (and chefs) are rising to the occasion. We like the offerings at GoldBelly, a curator of nostalgic foods across America’s best known establishments. It goes without saying that a framed photo or photo book for their coffee table will also make a nice impression. Hint: Use group photos as emotions may still be raw.
7. Plant a treeIn some faiths, the gift of a tree or sapling symbolizes budding growth and rebirth from loss. Another option, from The Comfort Company, will mail someone the seeds to plant a tree for herself.
8. Create a recipe plateThis is a good idea for carrying on family traditions. Upload a recipe everyone loves and have it transferred onto a quiche plate or serving dish so it can become a permanent display in someone's kitchen and remind them of their favorite cook. 9. Hire a serviceIt’s rare to expect to lose someone, and when we do it seems everything goes awry. 10. Try a grief boxThere are endless places to turn for non-food care baskets but we find many too hollow to send as a sympathy gift. Customer contact is done via WhatsApp and email — a standard method in the grey or black market for internet cigarette shops.
The Contradiction in Messaging
Curiously enough, the very same site that sells cigarettes (while formally warning that it is illegal to sell tobacco products to minors) also displays a “STOP SMOKING” banner with an drawing of lungs crossed by a cigarette.
In a section titled “STOP TOBACCO”, the text states:
“Giving up smoking is hard, but every effort counts. Within minutes, your body begins to heal — and as time goes by, your health and vitality return. Let’s start today!”
This public health message appears right next to a list of items for sale with prices from $160 to $250 per carton and a call to action: “Purchase cigarettes online in Australia for the lowest price.” Such double messaging is characteristic of unlicensed or “grey market” tobacco shops that try to feign social responsibility while continuing to sell addictive products.
Potential Legal Problems
The text fails to mention whether the seller possesses a proper local permit for tobacco. Australia is recognised for some of the strictest tobacco laws in the world, including standardised packaging rules and very large tobacco duties. The offer of “cheap” cigarettes — especially “Dubai Edition” or “UK Version” — often indicates products that have evaded taxes, been brought in illegally, or are fake.
Conclusion
The online shop described above is a textbook example of a shadow online tobacco business. It profits from smokers’ wish for cheaper prices in the context of Australia’s high legal tobacco taxes, while hiding behind empty health warnings and claims of customer care. Potential buyers should be aware that buying unlicensed tobacco carries not only legal risks but also a total absence of any assurance regarding product safety and authenticity.
